Monday night marked the eighteenth and final night of the LIDOM round robin playoff, with Estrellas Orientales punching their ticket to the final series over the weekend.
Attention turns to Toros del Este and Leones del Escogido. Los Toros matched with las Estrellas in La Romana while Escogido had to deal with Tigres del Licey in Santo Domingo.
Both opposition squads were diminished somewhat, as the triumphant Estrellas rest their top players for the finals and Licey gives some of their deputies a shot in wake of their elimination.
The games proceeded in almost parallel fashion, both contestants coasting to wins, necessitating a nineteenth contest Tuesday night that will decide which club has the right to face the upstarts from San Pedro de Macorís.
Los Toros struck quickly in the bottom of the first against Henry Sosa on singles by Rubén Sosa and Jordany Valdespín, a stolen base and a pair of throwing errors. The La Romana club added another in the third when Valdespín sliced a double to left driving in speedster Jorge Mateo, who was hit by a pitch and stole second. Jenrry Mejía was not quite as dominant as usual, striking out only three but still turning in six innings of shutout ball as his Toros.won 3-0. Fernando Abad took the save.
Escogido scored their first in the bottom of the second on an RBI knock by Iván Castillo scoring Ronny Paulino, who had singled and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by Leuris Gómez. Los Leones scored their second in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Court off Atahualpa Severino.
The capital club continued to tack on in the sixth, a sacrifice fly by Castillo following a double by Chris Roberson and a single by César Puello.
Catcher Wilkin Castillo notched his fourth hit on the night in the eighth, stealing second and scoring on a single by Diego Goris to make it 4-0. Paulino broke it open with a two-out single, a throwing error opening the floodgates to a 7-0 victory.
Starter Enny Romero was excellent, the lefty striking out eight over six shutout frames to earn the win.
